Panama suspends October 12 classes for earthquake inspections

The nationwide closure covers public and private schools, while housing assessments and road repairs address separate needs in the recovery.

Families across Panama will have to plan for a Monday without school while inspectors assess buildings after Friday’s earthquake. The Education Ministry announced on Saturday, October 10, that classes would be suspended nationwide on Monday, October 12, 2026, in public and private schools. The pause allows inspections to continue before students, teachers and administrative staff return. Telemetro.

The closure’s nationwide reach tells families where classes are suspended; it does not establish that every school suffered damage. The ministry’s notice confirms Monday’s suspension but gives no reopening date. Families therefore cannot take it as confirmation of a Tuesday return. Telemetro.

Panama’s Instituto de Geociencias estimated the Friday, October 9 earthquake at magnitude 7.5, according to Panamá América. That figure is the institute’s estimate. The government declared a state of emergency on October 10 to prioritize assistance to affected families. Its account describes work on schools, homes and roads—each addressing a different obstacle to resuming daily life. Panama Presidency.

The school-damage figures remain unresolved. The Presidency’s official government account dated October 10 reported 419 affected educational establishments. Infobae’s report dated October 10 instead attributed a preliminary total of 219 affected schools to Education Minister Ventura Vega, including 24 requiring reconstruction. Those 24 belong within Infobae’s reported 219; they are not an additional group or a confirmed breakdown of the Presidency’s 419.

Neither account explains why the totals differ or establishes that one replaces the other. Infobae also reported Vega’s warning that the count was not final: regional reports were being passed to the emergency operations centre, with civil protection agency Sinaproc responsible for consolidating and communicating the official balance. News outlets repeating ministry statements do not provide independent surveys of building damage.

For education, inspections address whether particular premises can be used. Vega raised temporary classroom modules as an option for schools whose buildings cannot immediately reopen. His comments do not establish that replacement classrooms are already available. He said the education system serves more than 800,000 students, illustrating why the nationwide suspension affects many more families than the preliminary damage totals alone suggest. Infobae.

For housing, the immediate question is which families can return home. Housing Minister Jaime Jované said his ministry was recording partial and complete damage and would work with Sinaproc to certify which residences could be inhabited again. That assessment concerns the condition of homes, rather than the timetable for reopening schools. Panama Presidency.

Road repairs address another need: getting supplies into communities and restoring connections. Public Works Minister José Luis Andrade said teams were working on routes in the Azuero peninsula and Veraguas to deliver essential goods and reconnect places including Torío, Arenas de Quebro and Tonosí. These were officials’ descriptions of response work, rather than confirmation that every affected route had reopened. Panama Presidency.

The distinction helps explain how recovery can proceed at different speeds. A restored road can let supplies reach a family whose home still needs assessment. A home certified for return does not, by itself, establish the condition of a child’s classroom. For Monday, the school instruction remains clear even while those separate questions are being answered: classes are suspended nationwide.
