Public transport suspension ordered in Kramatorsk and Sloviansk after bus strike

Authorities ordered public transport suspended after the October 8 attack; Sloviansk specified an October 9 start, but neither notice confirmed subsequent operations or gave a reopening date.

Residents who rely on buses for everyday journeys in Kramatorsk and Sloviansk face public transport suspension orders following the October 8, 2026 attack on passenger buses in Kramatorsk. The two published notices differ in what they tell passengers: a regional instruction covers both communities, while Sloviansk’s announcement specifies which bus routes are affected and when they are to stop.

In its October 8 notice, the Donetsk regional administration said its head, Vadym Filashkin, had directed both city military administrations to suspend public transport, citing a sharp deterioration in security. He described the decision as a measure to protect passengers and drivers. The notice specifies neither a start date nor a reopening date.

Sloviansk’s city military administration announcement, also published on October 8, says urban and suburban bus routes within the Sloviansk community are to stop from Friday, October 9. It gives no reopening date. Neither notice confirms what services subsequently operated. The regional notice leaves Kramatorsk’s start date unspecified; that omission does not establish a conflicting timetable.

The regional administration also urged Donetsk residents to evacuate to safer parts of Ukraine. Its notice lists separate evacuation contacts for the general public and for seriously ill people and people with disabilities, but does not explain how those arrangements will operate alongside the transport suspensions.

The attack occurred on the morning of October 8. Associated Press’s account, republished by EdGlenToday on October 9, reported 30 deaths and said a Russian guided bomb exploded beside buses carrying passengers near a bus stop, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Regional police said two passenger buses and pedestrians were caught in the strike. Emergency services said drones over the site forced rescuers to interrupt their work and take shelter, Suspilne Donbas reported on October 8.

The casualty reports require care because some figures reflect updates, while others count different attacks.

The regional administration’s October 8 notice reports 30 deaths and 18 injuries in the bus strike. In its 3:52 p.m. update that day, Suspilne reported two additional injured people. Citing Filashkin and local police chief Artem Kuznetsov, it gives 30 deaths and 20 injuries as of 2:55 p.m. local time. That update explains the increase from 18 to 20 injuries.

An October 8 Interfax-Ukraine report attributes 33 bus-strike deaths and 18 injuries to Ukraine’s emergency services. It separately reports three deaths in Bilenke. The difference between its report of 33 bus-strike deaths and the other reports of 30 remains unresolved; 33 cannot be presented as an agreed final count.

An October 8 evening report by Ukrinform, Ukraine’s state-affiliated news agency, quoted Kramatorsk military administration head Oleksandr Honcharenko giving a wider community total of 35 deaths. His stated breakdown was at least 30 in the bus strike, three in a separate attack on Bilenke and two in a drone strike on a car in central Kramatorsk. The total of 35 covers separate attacks and must not be described as the bus-strike toll. It also does not resolve the difference between 30 and 33. Honcharenko announced October 9 as a day of mourning.

These casualty figures come from Ukrainian officials and emergency services. Separate news organizations reporting those figures does not amount to independent verification of the underlying counts. EdGlenToday carries AP’s reporting, rather than supplying another confirmation.
