G7 agrees to release emergency fuel reserves
G7 leaders agreed Friday to release up to 100 million barrels of diesel and crude oil over four months, coordinated through the International Energy Agency. A substantial diesel release is planned within the first 20 days. Governments also pledged to avoid energy export restrictions between members. Diesel supplies matter for trucking, farming and the cost of delivering goods. Drawing on reserves can ease immediate supply pressures, but uses a finite buffer. The timing and size of any fall in retail prices remain uncertain. G7 countries to release 100 million barrels of diesel and oil to curb fuel prices
U.S. announces one-time $90 Medicare payments
President Donald Trump announced Friday that more than 20 million Medicare beneficiaries would receive a one-time $90 payment toward medical-insurance premiums. The White House says most eligible recipients will receive direct deposits in early October, with checks mailed to others. At $90 each, payments to more than 20 million people would total over $1.8 billion. Support is limited to a single payment rather than a permanent reduction in premiums. Trump said funding would come from the Medicare Improvement Fund. Trump says US to send one-time $90 payment to 20 million seniors enrolled in Medicare
Boats bring food to flooded Bangkok communities
Food and essential supplies reached three Bangkok communities Saturday, according to The Nation, whose foundation organized the deliveries. Its reporters described water still 60–70 centimeters deep at Rom Klao housing estate, where boats carried meals to elderly residents unable to wade out. At Kheha Thani 4, home to more than 3,000 people, residents were wading through water to obtain food or reach work. Authorities have reported about 40 flood-related deaths and declared a disaster across all 50 city districts. The deliveries show how standing water continues to interrupt daily necessities after the earlier downpours. Nearly 1,500 migrants return from Malaysia to Myanmar
Three ships carrying migrants returned from Malaysia reached Thanlyin, Myanmar, Sunday morning. A Myanmar naval official told AFP that nearly 1,500 people had arrived, and AFP journalists saw families waiting outside the base. Malaysia says the returns were voluntary. The UN refugee agency said its staff had not been allowed to meet returnees to establish whether their decisions were free and informed. The arrivals are the first group in an announced plan involving 5,000 people. With Myanmar experiencing civil war, questions about consent and conditions after return remain unresolved. Fossil study reopens the timeline of animal origins
A study in Science Advances suggests animals could have originated 700–800 million years ago, earlier than some fossil-based estimates. Researchers examined more than 140 samples of exceptionally preserved Mongolian microfossils from a period when animals are known elsewhere, yet found none confidently identifiable as animals. That comparison challenges the assumption that a well-preserved deposit would necessarily capture animals living at the time. Using older geological constraints shifted estimates based on genetic differences between living species further into the past. The revised dates remain estimates, with direct fossil evidence still missing. Animals may have evolved vastly earlier than fossil evidence suggests
UAE gives preliminary findings on flydubai incident
The UAE attorney general said Saturday that a flydubai co-pilot had attempted a terrorist act during Wednesday’s flight to Israel. The preliminary findings, reported by state news agency WAM, said he attacked the captain and tried to take control of the aircraft. Passengers and crew intervened, and the plane landed in Saudi Arabia. The co-pilot is in UAE custody. Investigators did not disclose a motive in the statement. Their characterization updates the investigation, while any organizational connection or wider responsibility remains unestablished in the disclosed findings. Greece returns remains identified as Tsar Samuel’s
Remains identified as those of medieval ruler Tsar Samuel arrived in Sofia Saturday and were placed in the Basilica of St Sophia, according to a municipal statement reported by Bulgaria’s news agency. Samuel ruled from 997 to 1014 during the First Bulgarian Empire. The remains were discovered at a basilica on an island in northern Greece’s Prespa Lake and later held in Thessaloniki. The transfer follows a bilateral cultural agreement under which Greece is also to receive nearly 50 religious relics removed to Bulgaria during World War I. Rays and White Sox win Division Series openers
Tampa Bay beat the New York Yankees 1–0 Saturday after Drew Rasmussen kept them hitless until two outs in the eighth inning. Jonathan Aranda’s solo home run supplied the scoring, and Rasmussen struck out 10 over eight innings. Chicago defeated Cleveland 3–0, with five White Sox pitchers combining to allow three hits and Munetaka Murakami hitting a two-run homer. The results give both winners a 1–0 series lead through contrasting pitching approaches: a long start for Tampa Bay and a shared workload for Chicago. Both series resume Monday. Rasmussen has no-hit bid for 7 2/3 innings, Rays open AL Division Series with a 1-0 win over Yanks · White Sox beat Guardians 3-0 in Game 1 of ALDS behind Murakami homer, 3-hitter
