Proposed statutory consent depends on a signed workforce guarantee
New South Wales announced plans on October 19 to legislate an annual production limit of 16.5 million tonnes for Mount Pleasant coal mine until 2032. The government says statutory consent would take effect only after MACH Energy signs a binding commitment to maintain its current permanent workforce until 2032. The proposal follows the October 7 High Court ruling concerning the mine’s expansion approval. In its earlier response, the government said the mine retains a separate operating approval until 2032. Existing permission to operate and the proposed higher production limit are therefore distinct. The announcement establishes a legislative proposal, with passage still pending.
