South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said North Korea launched a second short-range ballistic missile from the Wonsan area at about 5:50 p.m. local time on September 20, following the previously reported launch at about 3:00 p.m. The first missile flew approximately 450 kilometres and the second more than 600 kilometres toward waters east of the Korean Peninsula; their precise specifications remain under analysis. South Korea’s National Security Office convened an emergency review meeting.

Missile launched toward sea east of the Korean Peninsula
North Korea launched a short-range ballistic missile from the Wonsan area toward the sea at around 06:00 UTC on September 20, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff. Japan’s defence ministry also identified the projectile as a likely ballistic missile, and NHK reported that it landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone. South Korea’s National Security Council condemned the launch, the second reported North Korean missile test in roughly a week. Japan’s prime minister instructed officials to collect information and confirm the safety of aircraft and vessels.
