Funding, laboratory and measurement initiatives expand alternatives to animal models
NIH announced $88 million for research infrastructure supporting human-based biomedical methods, plus a challenge offering more than $7 million for quantum-enabled measurement tools. The agency also plans an organoid laboratory combining robotics, AI and standardized models, recruitment of grant reviewers with relevant expertise, and consultation on annual reporting of vertebrate-animal use. Together, the initiatives address facilities, measurement, experimentation, peer review and transparency. They remain investments and planning steps, however: the announcement does not establish that these methods are validated for every research use or that animal models have been replaced.
