Annual inflation accelerates in both underlying measures
Japan’s consumer prices excluding fresh food rose 2.1% from a year earlier in September, the Statistics Bureau’s October 23 release showed. Reuters reported an August rate of 1.7%. The measure excluding both fresh food and energy rose 2.4%, compared with August’s 1.9%. Subtracting the August readings gives accelerations of 0.4 and 0.5 percentage points, respectively. These compare annual inflation rates, rather than measuring price increases between August and September. The second measure shows that annual inflation also accelerated when energy was excluded.
