Coalition targets data, benchmarks and tools for underrepresented languages
Sixty organizations announced a five-year effort on September 21 to make AI tools usable in the languages and voices of an estimated 3.4 billion people whose languages are underrepresented in current models. Participants include AI developers, governments, researchers and civil-society groups. They plan to coordinate openly licensed language-data infrastructure, performance benchmarks, practical tools, and safeguards for privacy, consent and data sovereignty. The OpenAI Foundation said its initial focus would include data and infrastructure for voice systems. This is a shared goal rather than a deployed service or guaranteed result: the coalition says its governance, detailed workstreams and participants’ respective commitments will be developed over the coming year.
