Completed count puts CDU below the 5% threshold
The completed count in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania put Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s CDU at 4.9%, below the 5% threshold for legislative representation and down from the earlier projection of 5.2%. El País reported the AfD first with 38% and the SPD second with 35%; the AfD remained four seats short of a majority, while other parties said they would not form one with it.

Later projections sharpen scale of CDU defeat
Later ARD projections based on exit polls and partial counting put Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s CDU at 5.2% in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, its lowest result in any German state since World War II. The AfD was projected at 37.7%. In Berlin, the Left led with 25.1%, followed by the CDU at 19.8%. These remain projections rather than final results. Merz described his party’s showing as a disaster but said his government would continue its economic reform agenda.
