Notifications begin; affected former students also qualify for support

Educational Testing Service began notifying affected California students and families on October 16 about copied student records, the state education department said. Distribution is expected to continue through early November. The notifications concern an earlier intrusion: ETS discovered it on September 25, and investigators identified copying between May 22 and September 18. Information involved varies by student but may include names, addresses, disability information and assessment results. Social Security numbers and financial account information were not involved. CDE identifies affected students enrolled from 2023 through the current school year, plus some who left California schools since 2006 without a confirmed transfer. Affected former students, including adults, qualify for 24 months of free identity protection. Receiving no notification does not establish that someone was unaffected, CDE cautions.
