About 76% support remaining; totals are unofficial

About 76% of counted votes favoured Alberta remaining in Canada, AP reported early on October 20, with more than 1 million votes counted following the October 19 referendum. The Canadian Press separately reported approximately the same share. Elections Alberta’s ballot text distinguishes the choice: voters could support remaining a province or beginning the constitutional process toward a later binding referendum on separation. This was therefore a vote on starting that process, rather than directly authorizing independence. Elections Alberta schedules official results for October 29 after verification of the unofficial count.
